Edmonton police are no longer investigating the death of a badly burned man found in the river valley.
The medical examiner said Thursday the 60-year-old man's death was "non-criminal in nature."
The fire department was dispatched to a brush fire in the North Saskatchewan River valley near 113 Street and 99 Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters found the burned body lying below the retaining wall of an apartment building.
Edmonton's river valley is a popular place for the city's homeless to set up makeshift camps and tents where they can live hidden among the trees and bushes.
Darren Grove, a city park ranger, said he often comes across tents and bedding that have been burned because of candles and other unattended heat sources.
The city said there were 498 campsites in the river valley last year, compared to 60 in 1999, when it first started keeping track. Two park rangers now work full-time to clean up abandoned camps.
