Edmonton homeowners installing high-efficiency furnaces will be able to tap into $500 rebates, the mayor announced Thursday.
Under the Carbon Dioxide Reduction Edmonton program, homeowners will receive $500, in addition to $500 from the federal Ecoenergy Retrofit program.
Mayor Stephen Mandel said city residents taking part in the federal program automatically qualify for the local rebate.
"Buy the furnace, we'll get notification and boom — you will get the cheque. Not a bad deal," he said.
Low-income households will be able to get $2,000 from the city for installing the furnaces.
The goal of the city's Carbon Dioxide Reduction Edmonton program is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Edmonton from 1990 levels by up to six per cent by 2010.
