Teen in intensive care after 'car surfing,' police say

A 16-year-old Alberta boy is in intensive care after "car surfing" on a moving vehicle.
The teenager fell Monday afternoon from a moving van on a rural road near High River, about 50 kilometres south of Calgary.
He hit his head on the road and is now in Alberta Children's Hospital.
Sgt. Larry Marzinzik said this is the first case he has dealt with of car surfing — trying to ride on hoods or hang onto a vehicle while it's being driven.
Youth are trying to copy the stunts they see in action films or in the Jackass television show and movies, he said.
"This is a life-threatening activity, this is risk taking at it's highest. You are dealing with a very large machine — a motor vehicle — that can take away lives in seconds."
Charges are pending against the 16-year-old who drove the van.
Marzinzik said at the very least, the driver could be fined under Alberta's Traffic Safety Act for allowing someone on the exterior of a moving vehicle.
