Stony Plain teacher charged with sexual assault of high school student
A high school teacher in Stony Plain has been charged after allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage student.
James Richard Pratt, 43, has been charged with the sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a female student at Memorial Composite High School.
Spruce Grove RCMP say they first began investigating after a complaint was made about Pratt in February, however court records show the alleged assault happened at the school on January 10.
“It actually didn't take that long for the complainant to come forward. She came forward to us in early February after taking some time and talking to her family about this,” said Cpl. Colette Zazulak with the RCMP.
Pratt, who taught grades 10 through 12 in the school’s Career and Technology Studies Department, was removed from his teaching position as soon as the investigation began.
He was then arrested on June 12, but released on the condition he have no contact with the female victim, who is now receiving support from Victim Services.
“We take this very seriously. Any crimes against children are a real breach of trust and we know there are lifelong emotional scars,” Zazulak said.
“We liaised with the Crown Prosecutor's office to seek an opinion with appropriate charges.”
RCMP are calling the alleged assault “an isolated incident.”
Pratt is expected to make his first court appearance on July 16.
