A man is in critical condition with a gunshot wound after a standoff Tuesday in Spruce Grove, 34 km west of Edmonton.
Spruce Grove and Stony Plain RCMP responded to a report of gunshots fired in a house located in the Garneau Gate area of Spruce Grove at about 2 p.m., police said in a news release.
As they arrived, police also heard what sounded like gunshots.
Area residents were told to stay in their homes as police contained the community.
Not long after, two women left the home unhurt.
It was reported the man inside had at least two guns.
At 6:20 p.m., after about four hours of negotiating with the man, police entered the home and arrested him.
"When we got to the male, he was already suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was transported to hospital," said Insp. Gibson Glavin.
The man is currently in critical condition.
"We did not discharge any weapons at all during this event," he said.
