A small superhero with a big Twitter following solved her case Monday, and freed a hockey star from a bogus bad guy.

Late Monday afternoon, SpiderMable bested a villain known as Mysterio and saved the day for Oilers captain Andrew Ference.

The caper was all part of an elaborate, city-wide manhunt set up by the The Children's Wish Foundation.

Mable Tooke has been fighting cancer since being diagnosed two years ago with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells.

While in treatment, the six-year-old has been reading comic books. Her favourites are the 1960s-era Spider-Man, because he was the closest hero to being human, her mother said.

So when The Children's Wish Foundation came knocking, Mable said what she wanted most was to meet her hero, confessing she often imagines herself fighting crime like him.

The six-year-old crime fighter and Spider-Man were summoned to Edmonton city hall Monday morning by Mayor Don Iveson, in the hopes that they could track down the missing hockey player and capture his kidnapper.

She's just the spunkiest, most hilarious child I think I personally have ever met.- Elizabeth LoPresti, The Children's Wish Foundation

"He is her biggest hero," said Elizabeth LoPresti with The Children's Wish Foundation.

LoPresti said the foundation worked with city police, the mayor's office, the Oilers, Mable's parents and other organizations across the city for weeks to organize the elaborate caper, which saw Mable search for clues and take up some superhero training.

"She's just the spunkiest, most hilarious child I think I personally have ever met," LoPresti said.

On Monday morning, Sgt. Steve Sharpe with the Edmonton Police Service appeared in a staged morning newscast posted to YouTube. In it, he reported that Ference had been kidnapped and begged SpiderMable for help.

"If SpiderMable is out there, and you get this message, come down to the mayor's office and be a part of that team and lead us towards safety and getting our captain back," Sharpe pleaded.

With instructions from Edmonton police, Mable suited-up set off after Mysterio.

The battle started at West Edmonton Mall. While the villain got away that time, eventually the clues led her to the Edmonton Valley Zoo where a final showdown with the treacherous villain Mysterio took place.

In the final showdown, SpiderMable was joined by new Oiler phenom Connor McDavid.
