Smoker blamed for Edmonton blaze
A fire in North Edmonton Saturday night forced dozens of tenants from their three-storey walk up and caused more than $250,000 in damage.
No one was injured, but three cats died in the fire at the apartment near the intersection of 144th Ave. and 88A St.
Most residents are now back at home, but the Red Cross had to find temporary accommodation for eight occupants because of smoke and water damage. It's not clear when they will be able to return to their homes.
Fire investigators said some type of smoker's material — ashes or a lighter — ignited bedding in one of the lower suites.
