Many Albertans were first introduced to Slave Lake Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee after fire destroyed one-third of her town on May 15, 2011, which propelled her into the media spotlight.
As Slave Lake marks the anniversary of that devastating fire, Pillay-Kinnee took time to speak to the CBC's Portia Clark about how her community has coped over the last year, as well as where she'd like it to be 12 months from now.
"I'd like to see the community fully rebuilt," she said. "I'd like to see families happy and coping with their losses and a thriving community. A beautiful community."
