Six people have been taken to Edmonton-area hospitals following a multiple-vehicle collision one mile east of Thorsby, Alta., RCMP said Tuesday.

STARS air ambulance flew one person in critical condition. EMS took another victim to hospital in serious condition and four others in stable condition, says Alberta Health Services.

Police say a chain reaction of collisions saw 11 vehicles involved in two separate accidents at the same location.

At around 7:30 a.m., Thorsby RCMP were called to a two-vehicle accident at Highway 39 and Range Road 11, where there were passengers with minor injuries, police say.

RCMP were called out to the same intersection again at 9 a.m. Two semi-tractor trailers had collided, and as a result, another seven vehicles crashed into one another, police say.

Visibility had deteriorated due to fog, along with smoke from a controlled burn in a nearby field that a farmer was doing.

Insp. Gibson Glavin said one victim in a Coca-Cola truck had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The collision has forced the closing of Highway 39 until further notice, police say.
