The dog found shot and abandoned north of Edmonton is making steady improvements, say her caretakers.

Two weeks ago Shania, a three-year-old shepherd cross, was found shot in the stomach and leg. The injury to her leg, in particular, was so bad veterinarians were unsure they could save it.

However, after an outpouring of public donations to cover the cost of her surgery and recovery, Shania’s leg was saved and is now doing well.

"She was walking on Day 2, so she's been walking around the vet clinic and she's putting a little weight on it. She's doing better and better every day," said April Oakes with Infinite Woofs Animal Rescue Society, the organization that rescued the dog.

Shania has months of rehab and physiotherapy ahead of her and vets say they're not sure she'll ever recover completely.
