A semi-truck explosion triggered road closures in Strathcona County Thursday morning.
RCMP say they received calls around 10 a.m. warning of a possible tanker truck explosion at Trimac Transportation Services on Petroleum Way in Sherwood Park.
When crews arrived, they found a semi-tanker truck that had caught fire while a welder was working on it. The fire started when an errant spark ignited a “small amount of diesel fuel.”
“This was a significant explosion,” said Vern Elliott, the Deputy Fire Chief of Strathcona County.
“It was just one fuel tank that you see that are on the roads. Thankfully there was no fuel in it, so this was just a quick explosion of the gases that were inside. Our station is only one kilometre away and we felt the explosion and you could definitely see smoke for a ways.”
The fire was put out within 15 minutes. No one was hurt.
Officials with Alberta Transportation Dangerous Goods and Occupational Health and Safety have been notified and are expected on scene.
All surrounding roads have now been reopened.
