Alberta Labour Minister Thomas Lukaszuk wants to hear from workers who believe their employers are not paying them properly for the Family Day holiday.
If Monday is a regular work day, people should get paid if they have the day off. If they work, they should get paid time and a half.
Lukaszuk says any complaints will be treated seriously because the law is clear.
“We investigate those files and we correct the wrong but it is not a widespread issue but each file is investigated,” he said. “So if anyone out there feels they were not properly paid please do report it.”
Cases that are reported to the government often turn out to be a misunderstanding, Lukaszuk said.
Federal government employees are not entitled to the Family Day Holiday.
They represent about ten per cent of Alberta's workforce.
