RCMP are investigating the discovery of remains found in a remote area of Brule near Hinton, Alta.

Staff Sgt. Mark Fitzgerald of the Hinton RCMP said the remains were found Tuesday afternoon by people driving all-terrain vehicles in the area, which Fitzgerald calls "extremely remote."

Police have been at the scene since the remains were reported, and are also receiving assistance from the Edmonton RCMP K Division.

Between 15 and 20 RCMP were spotted on scene Wednesday afternoon, conducting what appeared to be a grid search of the area. The RCMP helicopter was also in use.

Investigators haven't yet released word on whether the remains are human.

"Right now, we’re just sifting the area," said Fitzgerald. "We don’t know what we have at this point but because of the location and just because of the call we’re going to take all of the necessary precautions. "

Fitzgerald estimates investigators will remain on scene until Friday.

Brule is 315 kilometres west of Edmonton.
