A Red Cross volunteer who helped set up emergency shelters and reception centres for Fort McMurray evacuees last May was honoured for her efforts Monday.

Brenna Brown, a manager for Paracel Laboratories in Calgary, was given the 2016 Leadership Award from the Canadian Council of Independent Laboratories.

Brown has volunteered for the Red Cross before. She helped with relief efforts for the 2011 Slave Lake fire and the 2013 floods in southern Alberta.

Last spring, she helped set up centres in Calgary and Edmonton to help the thousands of people forced to leave Fort McMurray due to the wildfire.
