Kirti Kumar Sherman, the father of Edmonton-Meadowlark MLA Raj Sherman, died Sunday after a lengthy battle with heart disease.
Sherman regularly talked publicly about his 73-year-old father's struggles with getting appropriate care and said it was one of the reasons why he started speaking out about problems in the health system.
"I always told his story of his delays in care just so people could understand that someone in the legislature who's from the healthcare industry and who is in public office can empathize with the public," Sherman said Monday.
Sherman used his weekly question in the legislature to read a statement about his father's life where he remembered him for his honesty, integrity and hard work.
"He will be remembered for his jovial nature and sense of humour and commitment to his family," Sherman told the legislature. "He instilled in his children the same values that his parents instilled in him: the duty to serve."
"He had a deep and abiding love of life and for all the people within it. He will be dearly missed by his family and all those who came to know him ... Dad, we thank you for all you've done for us. We love you and bid you farewell. May God bless you."
Sherman said he will be taking some time off to look after family matters.
