A mom in Calmar is celebrating after the province announced school kids will again learn basic math facts in the classroom.

Nhung Tran-Davies started a petition asking the government to move away from "discovery math" and to move back towards the basics, including memorizing equations and times tables.

She was pleased to hear that education officials will do just that.

“We are not going backward , we are just ensuring the mastery of certain skills that would never be outdated for our children and for anybody in any time period,” she said.

The math curriculum will be updated for students from kindergarten to Grade 9.

Tran-Davies said many math professors signed her petition, which ended up getting almost 17,000 signatures.
