Power has now been restored at two Suncor sites north of Fort McMurray.
Thousands of employees and contractors were told to leave the oil Sands and Firebag sites after a massive power outage Thursday evening.
The company initiated emergency response plans after losing power around 5 p.m.
In a message released shortly after the outage started, Suncor said “currently, our focus is on responding to the situation and ensuring the people involved are safe.”
The company also warned the outage would cause increased flaring, releasing excess natural gas. A spokesperson for Suncor said they are monitoring air quality.
"I understand that the resulting flaring from our operations may have been a concern to the public and want to reassure folks all readings were within air quality guidelines," said spokesperson Sneh Seetal on Friday morning.
Seetal said power has now been fully restored to both plants, allowing workers to return and some production to resume.
No injuries have been reported. There is no word yet on what caused the power to go out.
