Police have identified the woman whose body was found in a burned-out car in Edmonton's west end Wednesday night as  26-year-old Shernell Sharon Pierre.

Police are treating the death as a homicide, Edmonton police Det. Dennis Storey said Friday.

He also said the fire was not the cause of her death, but would not elaborate.

The 2003 grey Toyota was on fire when crews arrived at the scene near 170 Street just south of 87 Avenue about 11:30 p.m. When they put out the fire, they discovered the body and called police.

Investigators believe the car had been southbound on 170 Street, and had pulled over to the side of the road before the fire occurred.

Fire investigators said the flames leapt 10 metres high, which they said was unusual for a vehicle fire.

Police said they need more information from witnesses to determine what happened and who's responsible, he added.

"We have a very busy road … I know for a fact people drove by this vehicle, OK. A lot of people saw this vehicle and it's important that you contact us and tell us what you saw," Storey said.
