Police detective faces charges

An Edmonton Police detective has been charged in connection with an event that allegedly took place last week, police said Thursday.

Edmonton Police Det. Whitcliff McLean, 40, has been charged with two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, police said Thursday.

A complaint was laid last week with the Edmonton Police Service Professional Standards Branch regarding a number of phone calls, police said.

The incident in which McLean has been charged allegedly occurred last week while he was on duty, but was in relation to a personal matter and not police business, police said.

McLean, who has been a member of the force for 15 years, has been suspended with pay.
