Edmonton police are negotiating with a man they say has barricaded himself inside his home in the city's northeast.

Officers were called to the area of 42nd Street and 135th Avenue at about 11 a.m. MT on Saturday.

Police say they were alerted by someone who knows the man, and received an unconfirmed report that he might have a gun.

Police also say the man was uttering threats.

In a written release sent Saturday evening, police said they were still negotiating with the man.

They said five neighbouring homes had been evacuated for the safety of the residents, but did not provide further details. Police are asking residents to stay with friends or family until the suspect is in custody.

Police said they don't expect to release any more information until the incident is resolved.
