Police say they have arrested a “person of interest” in the assault of a 46-year-old woman outside a Chapters bookstore in west Edmonton.

The man was arrested at a residence around 4:30 p.m. Friday. He is now being interviewed by police investigators.

The woman and her seven-year-old daughter were walking through the parking lot of the mall at 170th Street and 99th Avenue around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday when a man pointed a gun and demanded her purse and car keys.

The woman and child tried to run but he knocked her to the ground and assaulted her.

The suspect then ran to a nearby vehicle that had been left running, threatening the owner before stealing the car and driving off.

The man remains in custody. Police aren’t releasing any additional information.
