A 53-year-old man died Thursday night after being hit by an RCMP vehicle responding to an assault complaint in the Slave Lake area of northern Alberta.
Police said that around 11 p.m. an RCMP vehicle was travelling near Desmarais, Alta., south on rural Mistassiny Road, when the driver swerved to avoid oncoming traffic and hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road. The man was thrown into the ditch.
He was taken to Wabasca Hospital, but died.
Names of the pedestrian and the RCMP officer, a 12-year police veteran, were not released.
An investigation is underway by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team.
Slave Lake is about 250 kilometres north of Edmonton.
