One man is dead and another injured after the boat they were riding in hit a sandbar on the Athabasca River 140 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.
Wood Buffalo RCMP were called to the site of the crash around 9 p.m. Saturday.
Because of the remote location, regional emergency services and search and rescue crews were assisted by military and RCMP helicopters
Police say one of the boat’s occupants, a 45-year-old man, was thrown out of the boat when it hit the sandbar. He was later pronounced dead.
The second man, 59, was taken to a Fort McMurray hospital where he is being treated for non life-threatening injuries.
Both men are from Fort McMurray.
Police say their investigation is still ongoing, but do not believe alcohol or foul play were factors in the crash.
