Edmonton police are investigating a Mill Woods shooting that left one 29-year-old man dead and 31-year-old man in hospital Saturday night.

The shooting took place around 10:30 p.m. at Mama’s Pizza on Mill Woods Road.

Police say that both victims, along with four others, got into an argument which quickly escalated until one of the men pulled out a gun.

The suspect fled the scene shortly before the police arrived.

Police are describing the suspect as a light-skinned black male in his mid-twenties. He was last seen wearing a hoodie and jacket.

Homicide detectives have been interviewing witnesses today.

They say that the shooting did not appear to have been random.

"I never thought anything like this would happen here"

Jenna Weber is a server at Mama’s. She was called in to open the restaurant this morning when one of her co-workers was too shaken up to come in to work.

Weber said she has never seen anything like this before at the restaurant, which mainly serves a group of regular customers — none of whom were involved in last night’s incident.

"I never thought anything like this would happen here," she said.

According to Weber, about 30 people were present at the time of the shooting.

Weber said one employee, who was outside at the time of the shooting, rushed inside to perform first aid on one of the victims until emergency personnel arrived on scene.

Unfortunately, Weber said that her co-worker’s efforts were in vain as that individual later died at the hospital.

Residents in the area are responding with visible shock and surprise to the shooting, which took place next door to a day care centre.

Felicen Mufuta lives just down the road from the restaurant and bar. He was in Mama Pizza just minutes before the shooting occurred.

"I stepped in here to have a beer [while i waited for my bus] and I left about 10:25."

"Usually there are always cops around the area, so [it feels] safe," said Mufata. "So [a shooting] happening here... it’s very scary."

"That could have been me," he said.

This is the second shooting to occur in Edmonton this weekend. A man in his twenties was shot early Saturday morning in the city’s north side. He is currently recovering in hospital.
