Ten Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Officers can now ticket companies for workplace safety violations.
The officers just completed training to act as peace officers. The government plans to certify all 143 officers to write tickets.
Labour Minister Thomas Lukaszuk says the officers will be able to issue fines to employers.
"They have now the new authority vested in them to write administrative fines which can be as much as $10,000 and tickets which can be as much as $500 for OHS infractions,” he said.
The next set of graduates will complete their peace officer training in June.
