Alberta Justice says correction officers failed when a Spruce Grove man accused of killing his wife went missing for five hours after he escaped from the University of Alberta hospital.
An investigation into the incident found that procedures, processes and protocols were not followed by the correctional officers watching over 36-year-old Christopher Nagel. If they had, according to a news release, the incident could have been prevented.
The correctional officers have been disciplined, but Alberta Justice would not provide any details due to “security considerations.”
Nagel was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Rienna Nagel, 36. The mother of five was killed on May 3.
Nagel was on the 2nd floor of the hospital recovering from an injury when he asked his guard to use the washroom. He then disappeared for five hours before he was eventually found hiding in the hospital on the 5th floor.
Alberta Justice said Nagel did not leave the property during the time he went missing.
No further details of the investigation will be released.
