The city is banning parking along Whyte Avenue after midnight on weekends in an attempt to improve safety.

Parking will be banned between Gateway Boulevard and 106 Street from midnight to 6 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings for three months.

It's meant to give taxis better access to people trying to get home after midnight from popular Edmonton nightspots.

Morris Blayways, head of the Old Strathcona Hospitality Association, said there's a huge demand for taxis.

"Sometimes it can tend to lead to some frustrating moments for some people," he said.

"You flag a cab down and someone cuts in front of you and gets involved — sort of a survival of the fittest— and some nights that leads to an issue."

The parking ban was worked out between the city, the police, the taxi commission and the business association.
