Council’s executive committee has said no to a businessman seeking a break on his taxes because of losses caused by the ongoing construction on Jasper Avenue and the Central LRT station.

Thomas Yu, owner of a convenience store and tailor shop located in the pedway system in Central Station, says he has seen a 70 per cent drop in business since work started last May.

"Consumer[s] cannot locate us off the street, inside the LRT station or with difficulties," he told councillors.

"Many instance we have to search for the customer and escort them to our store. Suppliers such as Coca Cola are unable to deliver product to our store"

Yu wants $742 of his 2012 property taxes waived since the city doesn’t compensate business owners for lost business.

However, councillors on the executive committee declined his request because they didn’t want to set a precedent.

Yu said he wasn't upset.  He just wanted to make the point that whenever the city undertakes construction projects, officials need to communicate and provide proper signage for affected businesses.
