The new Edmonton Remand Centre is giving residents a chance to see their tax dollars in action.

Tours of the prison, years in the making at a cost of more than half a billion dollars, will continue through Tuesday. Inmates will be transferred to the new facility beginning next month.

Spokeswoman Wendy McRath told CBC News the "state-of-the-art facility" will "certainly ease inmate population pressures. The new centre will open with the capacity to house 1,952 inmates."

McGrath hopes the community will come and see "Canada's largest and most technologically advanced correction centre. All ages are welcome. During the public open houses, no cameras or video will be allowed."

Hours for the open house are noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, noon to 8 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. The centre is located at 184 Avenue and 127 Street.
