A 51-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Robin Douglas Goodwin, who was reported missing in January 2007.

Goodwin, 47, was last seen alive in September 2006 while working at a mining business in Nisku, Alta.

Police located human remains near Hillard, Alta in November 2007, after they received a tip from a resident about suspicious clothing found on a rural property 25 kilometers west of Vegreville.

In June 2008, DNA analysis confirmed the remains were that of Goodwin.

The property was searched several more times throughout the seven-year investigation.

A search in August 2013 used more specific search methods that weren’t available to the officers who searched the property earlier.

In a statement, Goodwin’s sister Mary Matchett asked for her family’s privacy and offered their thanks to the RCMP.

“Our family is very grateful for the RCMP's perseverance during this investigation over the past several years,” she said.

“These have been very difficult times for our family … we miss Robin every day and he would have been 53 years old next month."

The accused will appear in Vegreville Provincial Court on Jan. 27.
