Mural honouring Eskimo legend defaced

Vandals defaced a mural honouring Edmonton Eskimos legend Rollie Miles and it may be damaged beyond repair.

The colourful painting depicted Miles over a running-track background and covered a bleacher wall behind Rollie Miles Field at Strathcona High School.

The mural is now covered over with white paint and contains the words "Foodlot Promotion Project" stenciled in black.

Miles was a force in getting Edmonton schools to compete against each other at sporting events. His grandson Jesse Lipscombe was disappointed to learn the mural may be destroyed.

"For this track and that mural, it just represents so much beauty, so much family and so much tradition, that for me, it definitely, definitely hit home," he said.

Wendy Wheeler, the artist behind the mural, said she isn't angry with the vandal or vandals who defaced it — instead, she would like to work with them to redo the image, which she and about a dozen others painted in 2007.

"It would be nice to either redo the old image or create a new image," she said. "Track and field is coming up and this looks like this, so it would be nice to see something happen."

It's not known when the vandalism occurred.
