Edmonton police are investigating a deadly motorcycle crash that happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police said officers from the west division observed a black Yamaha motorcycle driving without any headlights on heading southbound on Groat Road near 116th Avenue.

Police said they attempted to hail the motorcycle using their emergency lights, but the driver accelerated away.

They didn’t pursue the motorcycle, they said.

Minutes later, the 32-year-old motorcyclist crashed into a pole at 139th Street and 114th Avenue.

Paramedics were called and treated the driver, who was from Gibbons, but he died on scene.

In a release made Sunday, police confirmed the crashed motorcycle had been stolen on May 7th.

Police say speed was likely a factor in the crash, but have not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs were also involved.
