A pedestrian in his 20s died after he was struck by car on Whyte Avenue.

Police say the man was crossing at 101st Street around 12:20 p.m. Monday when he was struck by the northbound vehicle which was making a left hand turn onto Whyte.

Witness Vlad Hyzhyi said the man couldn't get out of the way in time.

"He decided to run away but he couldn't because he was stopped with this garbage bin," Hyzhyi said. "At that moment, the yellow car crashed (into) him."

The man was crossing legally in a marked crosswalk.

“The pedestrian light was activated at the time,” said Insp. Chad Tawfik.

Tawfik says witnesses tried to help the man. EMS took him to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Police interviewed the woman who was driving the car.

Whyte Avenue between 100 Street and 101 Street reopened to traffic late Monday afternoon.
