Man's body found in construction site elevator shaft
RCMP in Wood Buffalo do not believe death was result of foul play
Wood Buffalo RCMP are investigating after a man’s body was found at the bottom of a construction site elevator shaft Sunday.
Police were called just before 4 a.m. Sunday after people reported seeing a suspicious person lingering at the construction site near Riverstone Ridge in Fort McMurray.
“By the time our members responded and arrived there, they were met by some employees of the construction site who had reported that they had seen a couple of suspicious males,” said RCMP Cpl. George Cameron.
The workers lost sight of the men, however, so police completed a foot patrol of the site.
They discovered the body of a Caucasian man at the bottom of the uncompleted elevator shaft.
“All we have so far is a male believed to be in his mid-20s. And at this point, we still have not been able to identify him,” said Cameron.
A second man was also found on site and has been detained by police, however they say foul play is not suspected.
“In any death, we treat it with the utmost urgency. We explore every avenue … and essentially what we do is rule things out as we go,” said Cameron, adding it is still unclear what the two men were doing on the construction site.
The entire site has now been secured while RCMP conduct their investigation.
