A 27-year-old man in a wheelchair died in Edmonton on the weekend after he was hit by a car while using a marked crosswalk, police say.

A 64-year-old woman who was crossing 34th Street and 44th Avenue at the same time on Saturday night was also hit by the Dodge Neon, but she was not critically injured.

They had just gotten off the bus and were using a marked and signed crosswalk, Insp. Dan Barns said.

The man received serious head, leg, and internal injuries, and was taken to hospital where he later died. The woman was admitted to hospital with a leg injury.

Police are still investigating and no charges have yet been laid against the driver of the vehicle.

However, the 28-year-old wife of the driver has been charged with obstruction of justice after she allegedly arrived in another vehicle, got into the car that hit the two pedestrians and drove away.
