A 25-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries after falling from the second to first floor at West Edmonton Mall early Monday morning.

The man was near the mall’s lagoon around 1:25 a.m. having a conversation with someone on the first floor.

Investigators think he either tried to jump down or lost his grip on the railing and fell, said police spokeswoman Patrycia Thenu.

"I can’t get into specifics but he did receive some very serious injuries from falling onto a hard surface," she said.

Alcohol was a factor in the incident. It is unlikely that any charges will be laid, Thenu said.
