Man drowns while fishing on Calling Lake

60-year-old man's body found by family after he fell into the lake when his canoe capsized Saturday afternoon.

A man has died after his canoe capsized while fishing on Calling Lake, say Athabasca RCMP.

Henry Houle, 60, was seen pulling up fishing nets into the canoe a couple hundred metres off shore Saturday afternoon when the boat tipped over and he disappeared into the frigid water.

At the time of the accident, there were strong winds on the lake with light snow or sleet falling.

A search of the area recovered the canoe and the nets, but turned up no sign of the Houle.

Another search was planned for Sunday morning. However, the man’s family started searching the area early in the morning and reported seeing the man’s body in the water.

Houle was not wearing a life jacket at the time and was described as a non-swimmer.
