In the city's first fatal crash of 2014, an Edmonton senior has died after the large SUV he was driving hit a snowbank and rolled on Yellowhead Trail Friday night.

Edmonton Police said around 11:45 pm, the 83-year-old's GMC Yukon lost control for some reason and hit the hard-packed snowbank near the off-ramp for Victoria Trail. The vehicle was sent flying into the air then rolled several times.

When officers arrived, the driver said he was OK. He was taken to hospital anyway and his condition got worse. He later died.

Police believe the man may have been drinking.

Officers with the major collisions investigation unit are still investigating.
