Edmonton police have charged a man in connection with two recent homicides in the city.

Melvin Simon John Mitchell, 23, has been charged with second degree murder in the deaths of Jose Rodriguez and Curtis Raymond Dugray.

Rodriguez, 68, was found dead inside a walk-up apartment at 83rd Street and Jasper Avenue on June 3. Police say Rodriguez had been stabbed to death.

The body of 51-year-old Dugray was found in a park near 99th Avenue and 111th Street on May 30.

Speaking Tuesday, Det. Bill Clark said the two victims did not know each other, but that both had met Mitchell because of his homeless lifestyle.

"There’s no other association, there’s no indication there had been any association prior to those incidents. but this is not a case where [Michell] just randomly came up to someone," said Clark.

"They actually did strike up a conversation, almost became associates and got along for a little while before something went wrong."

Clark said Mitchell is originally from the Northwest Territories, but has been living in Edmonton for almost a year.

Mitchell is well known to police in both Edmonton and the Northwest Territories, he added.
