A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the slaying of a woman who was shot and killed in an Edmonton LRT station last week, Edmonton police confirmed Tuesday morning.

Heather Rae Thurier, 23, was shot in the head after what police said was a conversation that escalated into a confrontation at the Stadium LRT stop about 10:20 p.m. Friday.

The man is in custody. The medical examiner was scheduled to conduct an autopsy on Thurier Tuesday afternoon.

Police said they expected charges would be announced after that autopsy was complete

"We believe that we have a viable suspect under arrest at this time and we're investigating at this very hour," Staff Sgt. Lorne Pubantz said. "There's an autopsy going on at this time. We are optimistic that there'll be charges brought forward."

A police officer recognized the suspect which helped investigators locate him, Pubantz said.
