After 1 1/2 years of construction, Jasper Avenue is finally open to four lanes of traffic.
The $20.9 million streetscape project is now complete.
- No evidence of nightshift for Jasper Avenue roadwork
- No tax break for business affected by Jasper Ave. roadwork
Downtown Edmonton's main thoroughfare was reduced to one lane in each direction back in the spring of 2012 for repairs to the Central LRT Station and streetscape work, which involved replacing the central median turning lanes, widening the sidewalks and installing decorative stone, lamps and benches.
"The Jasper Avenue closure has been a major inconvenience for those entering or travelling through downtown,” said Barry Belcourt, branch manager for Emonton Roads Design and Construction. “At the end of the day, everyone benefits from improved road infrastructure.”
Some smaller parts of the project won't be completed until 2014.
