Influential Edmonton philanthropist dies at 90
John Poole, one of Edmonton's most influential and generous citizens, has died at the age of90.
Poole was the former owner of PCL construction, a company that was founded by his father.Poole was described as a tireless community supporter who continued to go to the office every day, even in his last years.
"He's one of the absolute finest individuals this city has ever known," said Mayor Stephen Mandel."You would not have a more marvelous, phenomenal human being that's ever lived in the city of Edmonton.He is, in my opinion, what everybody should aspire to."
Poole and his wife, Barbara, have donated millions to the local arts, including the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton Opera, Alberta Ballet and the Citadel Theatre.
Poole was named an officer of the Order of Canada10 years ago.
He died Monday evening.
