Icy roads is making travel west of Edmonton, near Edson, treacherous.

RCMP are advising against travel on Highway 16 between Hinton and Edson as the highway is currently extremely icy.

"It's just a mess," said trucker Walter Quiring, who is stuck on the highway about 20 kilometres west of Edson. "I haven't seen a sanding truck ... and I've been on this highway for four hours. It's a disgrace."

Police reported they are dealing with several motor vehicle collisions.

Quiring said his truck is crawling along on sheer ice on a steep hill going into Edson along with hundreds of other truckers, some of which have slid into the ditch.

Cars and pickup trucks are spinning their wheels trying to scoot around and in between trucks, he said.

Quiring is hauling produce from Vancouver and was expecting to be in Edmonton hours earlier.

"Obviously that isn't going to happen — I might not get there until noon," he said.

"This is the worst I've seen. I driven most of my life between Calgary and Edmonton and I've never seen anything like this."

Quiring later reported that sanding trucks finally arrived around 8 a.m.
