Thousands of students from across northern Alberta were at Rexall Place on Monday for Hockey Hooky day.

They were there to watch the Edmonton Oil Kings take on the Victoria Royals.

Education minister David Eggen was on hand to drop the puck.

Telus World of Science was doing demonstrations and there were workbooks to make the day more educational. But most of the kids were just there to cheer and enjoy the field trip.

Unfortunately, the Oil Kings lost 6-1.

According to the team's website, more than 12,000 people were at the game.

CBC's John Robertson went to check out the fun.
