Highway 22 crash kills young hockey player
Weather and road conditions are being cited as possible factors in a deadly crash on Highway 22.
A 20-year-old Drayton Valley man died Thursday in a head-on collision about a kilometer north of township road 503.
Drayton Valley RCMP said the highway was covered with snow and slush at the time of the crash. The 20-year-old died at the scene.
The other driver, a 34-year-old man, was removed from his vehicle by the fire department and taken to hospital with undetermined injuries, police said.
The highway was closed to traffic for more than five hours.
The name of the victim hasn't been released, but the Whitecourt Wolverines Junior B hockey team have identified the man as alumni Elias Lachance, a member of the 2009 and 2010 Wolverines.
Team Owner and president Brent Stark said in a statement that it was the saddest day in the history of the team and that he and other members of the Wolverine organization felt a sense of utter loss and tragedy.
"Elias is remembered by all who knew him as a fine young man with an infectious smile. His unique approach to life gave him the nickname 'Hollywood' which was accented by his flair in his own personal appearance," the statement said.
Lachance reportedly played most recently for the Spruce Grove Regals.
The collision is still under investigation.
