A fire that destroyed a house under construction in the Highlands neighbourhood was deliberately set, investigators say.

Home owner Rob Toal says he was at the worksite around 8:30 p.m. last night, but saw nothing of concern.

"We found out this morning," he said. "My wife got a text from friends of ours. They had their TV on and saying that the house fire, 'Is that your house.'

"Panic, I could see it in her eyes."

The home, at 114th Avenue and 68th Street, was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around 11 p.m.

This morning, fire investigators concluded the fire was deliberately set.

Three neighbouring homes were damaged by embers and heat.

Nobody was hurt in the fire.

Damage to all four houses involved is estimated at $300,000.
