The High Level Bridge will be lit up with 60,000 LED lights by July 1 now that a fundraising campaign has reached its goal of $2.5 million.
The Light the Bridge campaign made the announcement in Edmonton on Tuesday.
People were encouraged to buy bulbs for the bridge at a cost of $25 each.
Amy and Chris Vanden Brink bought a bulb for their son, Max, who was hospitalized after he was born 2 ½ months premature.
“We were driving across the bridge every day to come home from seeing him at the hospital. He was in the NICU for three months,” Amy Vanden Brink said.
“We see it as a great symbol of hope that one day he would drive across the bridge with us.”
Vanden Brink said when Max gets old enough to bike or play soccer in the river valley she and her husband hope to point to the bridge and tell him he is a part of it.
