Girl, 9, struck in north Edmonton crosswalk
A nine-year-old girl is recovering after she was struck in a crosswalk in north Edmonton Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred on 132nd Avenue, where St. Matthew Elementary and Archbishop O’Leary High School are situated on either side of the road.
Police say the girl was hit when a driver performed an illegal u-turn after dropping off children at school. Charges are pending against her.
Aga Sarnelli, whose son goes to St. Matthew, says people drive by the schools too quickly.
“I think if they put in a traffic light here where it actually (turns) red when people are crossing, that might help when people are in the crosswalk,” she said.
But not everyone agrees a stop light is the answer.
“Can`t control everything even if you put stop lights on there if those drivers just keep passing right through you,” parent Eric Guzman said.
This isn’t the first time a student has been hurt at this crosswalk .Last fall, a 16-year-old girl spent a month in hospital after she was struck by a vehicle.,
