A number of people evacuated after a gas-line rupture in northeast Edmonton on Tuesday night have been allowed to return home.

Dozens of people were evacuated from a  20-unit building in the Beverly neighbourhood, after an SUV crashed into a gas-service hut at 34th Street and Abbottsfield Road, just after midnight Tuesday.

Police arrived at the scene, noticed a hissing sound and called fire officials. An eight-inch high-pressure gas line was severed, and firefighters worked alongside ATCO gas officials to cap the leak.

Fire officials say the situation is now under control.
