Gary Mar, Alberta's official representative in Washington, has resigned his post.

Mar is a former cabinet minister who is widely expected to announce he's running for the leadership of the Alberta Progressive Conservative party. He held the health and education portfolios under former premier Ralph Klein.

He announced his resignation in a letter Monday to International and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Iris Evans.

Mar started in the Washington post in December of 2007. Last summer his contract was renewed until December of 2013.

There are four announced candidates in the race to replace Premier Ed Stelmach as party leader when he steps down later this year: former finance minister Ted Morton, former justice minister Alison Redford, former advanced education minister Doug Horner and Battle River-Wainwright MLA Doug Griffiths.
